Daubert’s 2020 NFL Draft Mailbag

I decided that I’m going to do a mailbag leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft. The NFL Draft is always a polarizing conversation. Every expert seems to have the same exact opinion. I don’t see a ton of different opinions out there. As always, most of my draft stuff varies from most people. I thought it would be a good idea to answer whatever questions people had. Let’s get things started.

We only got one question this week. That’s okay. After this question, I’m going to go on a little rant.

Which team trades up to grab their guy early? Feels like a ‘go get your guy’ first round.

We’re still far away from the draft. Trade up scenarios can fluctuate day by day. My guess is that the action starts with the 4th pick. Assuming the Bengals pick Joe Burrow, the Skins take Chase Young, and the Lions take Jeff Okudah, the Giants are on the clock. They look the obvious trade down candidate. My gut tells me the Panthers are the the team. David Tepper has been really aggressive as an owner. They don’t appear to have any interest in bringing back Cam Newton. They fired Ron Rivera midseason. Tepper is anxious to pair a young quarterback with Matt Rhule and Joe Brady. My guess is that Carolina is the first team that trades up to get their guy. Who that is remains to be seen.

I’ll end the post with a rant. I expect more questions the closer we get to the draft. The NFL community is just WRONG about this quarterback class. This is the type of thing I’ll put my entire reputation on the line. If you pass on Tua Tagovailoa, you will have to live with the consequences. This is left-handed Russell Wilson. We’re talking about a guy is has the best QBR in the history of the sport playing in the SEC with a different offensive coordinator in every season.

Tua is a can’t miss prospect. These type of generational quarterbacks don’t come around too often. I’ve never seen a collegiate quarterback progressing through reads better than Tua. His quick twitch, timing, ability to read coverages, movement skills are all off the charts.

You don’t pass on that guy. Especially for a one year wonder who was AWFUL in 2018. There’s no way to sugar coat it. Burrow was bad in 2018. How much of his success in 2019 was Joe Brady and how much was Burrow? It’s a question we won’t find the answer to until he plays in the league. Statistically, Tua is the better quarterback and is two years younger. It’s not close. Tua would be on the top of my board in 2019 and 2018 too.
